A specific project by the Geoservice of the University of Groningen related to climate adaptation is flood risk management. Municipalities and district water boards require insight into the consequences of climate change and the measures to reduce these effects, preferably at a street or even home level. The Tauw Company has created the WOLK model to provide rapid detailed insight into flooding due to rainfall.
In an initial pilot in collaboration with the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, specific vulnerable sites were identified in the city of Groningen, resulting in immediate action by relevant governmental agencies and residents. Other local governmental agencies have followed since, with good results. Since 2016 the model has also been successfully applied in cities such as Oslo, Tainan and Manila.
