The IJkdijk Flood Control research project showed that application of modern measurement and monitoring systems in dikes and other dams should result in higher accuracy and efficiency as well as faster decision making.
Based on these results, new measuring systems were used experimentally in real dikes. Efficiency and water safety proved to be verifiably better. Similar experiments throughout the Netherlands were coordinated from Groningen.
The practical application of developed knowledge is currently being elaborated on. In the near future Dutch (and foreign) district water boards and the Directorate General for Public
Works and Water Management will be able to take more focused decisions on reinforcement and management.
