Climate Adaptation in Northern Netherland

The climate is changing – and those changes will have an impact on our lives. Not only globally, but also locally in the Northern Netherlands. The urgency of this matter is already noticeable. Above-average warm temperatures, a continuous drought and heavy, localized rainfalls accompanied us this summer.

Worldwide, researchers, governments, companies and institutions are working on innovative measures, which are necessary to ward off the changing climate. The Global Center on Adaptation, located in Groningen and Rotterdam, acts as a solutions broker, bringing all relevant stakeholders together that can address the obstacles slowing down adaptation action. The Global Center will accelerate the global climate adaptation tasks.

The symposium ‘Climate Adaptation in Northern Netherland’ will provide you with an insight into the knowledge and experiences that live in the Northern Netherlands. Experts from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Tauw, Wetsus, the municipality of Groningen and more will show you on which climate issues they are currently working, and how they contribute to a climate-proof society.

Take a look behind the scenes, broaden your network and enter into new collaborations. After all, working on a changing climate is something we cannot do alone!

Session round 1

 (14:30 – 15:30)

Climate and behavior

Climate change and human actions are closely related. What influence does our behavior have on our living environment? What behavioral changes are needed to combat climate change? In what way can we manage human behavior in such a way that it contributes to a climate-proof environment? The speakers of this theme give you an insight into the interaction between behavior and climate change.

Climate and the city

Climate change brings particular challenges to urban areas. Due to the dense construction and the large amount of built-up area, the effects of climate change in urban spaces are more pronounced than in the outlying area. Cities warm up faster and cool down more slowly; In addition, there is more water flooding. Space is scarce, as a result of which different interests need to be united on a relatively small area. This session will go deeper into the challenges that climate change brings to the city.

Speakers
Floris Boogaard (Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen)
Alfred Kazemier (Gemeente Groningen)

Climate and agriculture

Agriculture occupies an important place in our economy and society. However, this sector is also experiencing the effects of climate change. Drought and heavy precipitation affect the growth and production of crops and the welfare of livestock. Soil salinization, species crowding and plant diseases pose a threat to the agricultural area. How does the agricultural sector deal with these changes? This session will go deeper into this issue.

Speakers
Emiel Elferink  (Van Hall Larenstein)

Session round 2

(15:30 – 16:30)

Climate and health

Climate change is a direct threat to our health. Because of higher temperatures and new local climates, pathogens are getting new opportunities all over the world. In cities this problem is even more direct, because cities retain heat and many people live together. Without measures, heat alone makes parts of cities unviable, especially for the elderly. The speakers of this theme will take you into the various effects that climate change has on our health and how we can arm ourselves against this.

Speakers
Adriana Tami (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen)
Maria Fernanda Vincenti (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen)
Frans Greven (GGD)

Climate and water

Climate and water are inextricably linked. The changing rainfall, including increasingly violent rain showers, longer periods of drought and rising sea levels affect our water management. In what way can we realize water storage and drainage? What is the influence of drought on the distribution of available water? The speakers of this theme will gladly tell you more about it.

Erik Jolink (Waterschap Hunze en Aa’s)
